David Roderique, CEcD, Economic Development Director, City of Buckeye
I have been a member of AAED for about 30 years, longer than any other professional organization I belong to. AAED has been extremely beneficial to my professional development in a number of ways. First – it is a great source of current information about issues and activities happening throughout the State; as an economic developer it is so critical to stay on top of what is going on, including new projects, key legislative issues, current trends, and best practices, and so I’ve always tried to attend the monthly lunches and the annual conferences.
Second – it is a terrific way to meet other economic developers and service providers, to network, and to establish professional and personal relationships; many of the relationships I enjoy today first started out and blossomed through AAED events. And third – I find that working through AAED is a great way to give back to the community; I’ve served on a variety of committees over the years, and have always enjoyed finding opportunities to share what I have learned.
I’ve taught the Basic Economic Development Course for more years than I can remember, but it’s something I really enjoy since I work with those who are new to the industry. Plus it is always fun to be acknowledged by your peers for your accomplishments – my first EDDE as “Economic Developer of the Year” in 1999 is still the award that has meant the most to me. AAED has been a key part of my professional career, and I would highly recommend that anyone new to the industry join AAED and get involved through participation in the various committees and events – you won’t regret it!
